Did you wake up this morning after watching the DNC Convention feeling a surreal sense of optimism and hope about the future? More than likely it’s the HRC2016 virus that is sweeping the nation in pandemic proportions. Delusional thoughts and compromised judgment are two of its major symptoms. Go to your local emergency room if you experience any of the following:
*A belief that “Democrats are the party of working people” and they “say ‘no’ to unfair trade deals.” That “Wall Street, corporations, and the super-rich are going to start paying their fair share of taxes” and that neoliberal Democrats will “pass a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United!” If you believe Clinton when she claims “that companies should share profits, not pad executive bonuses” or that she will “liberate millions of people who already have student debt.” If you believe that capitalism can work “for everyone, not just those at the top” and it’s possible to make it an “economy where everyone who wants a good paying job can get one.” If, like Clinton, you trust that “American corporations that have gotten so much from our country” can become “just as patriotic in return.”
*If you now believe that white supremacy and racial violence can simply be cured by “rebuilding trust” between the police and Black and Brown communities, and if white people put themselves “in the shoes of young black and Latino men and women who face the effects of systemic racism, and are made to feel like their lives are disposable.” If Black and Brown people would only put themselves in “the shoes of police officers” will we be able to “reform our criminal justice system from end-to-end.”
*If you believe the US was founded on the principles of “Freedom and equality, justice and opportunity” forged by a common unity by an “enduring truth that we are stronger together” based on the “bonds of trust and respect” and a “faith in each other.” Or that “when any barrier falls in America, for anyone, it clears the way for everyone.”
**You ARE NOT infected if you are experiencing a nationalistic chill from when Clinton hawkishly declared that “America’s strength… relies on smarts, judgment, cool resolve, and the precise and strategic application of power” OR when Leon Panetta’s speech was interrupted by chants of ‘No More War!’ only to be shouted down by the larger crowd chanting “Hillary” and “USA” as the DNC turned off the lights over the “no more war” chanters.
